Well graduation weekend came and went. David Plouffe, President Obama's campaign manager, was our convocation speaker and was average at best in my opinion. He said something about getting off our butts and working hard and he also stressed the importance of work-life balance. Seriously, is that the best he could come up with? I don't even need 3-5 more years to tell you that David Plouffe failed to inspire me.
But that doesn't mean the entire weekend was for naught. My parents yelled at me for a good portion of the festivities for two reasons:
A.) I did not wear business casual under my cap & gown like everyone else (it was freaking hot during commencement).
B.) I (tastefully) decorated my cap because I believe commencement should be fun and festive. Once again, I was the deviant amongst my classmates.
Throughout the weekend, my father lectured me endlessly about the need to conform in order to succeed in corporate America. The more and more he lectured, the more and more I began to realize that maybe I need to do my own thing. Although my parent's disapproval may not have inspired me to do great things, it certainly has inspired me to follow my heart and to lean towards the path less traveled.
