So a week has passed since graduation and I have one more month left in Ithaca to figure out where to go from here. Over the past weekend, I had the pleasure of experience two big local events: The Annual Ithaca Festival and the home opener for the Ithaca SufferJets. The Ithaca Festival was quite an interesting experience. It was as if the entire town of Ithaca had come out for this annual celebration of music, dance, performance and food. The festival was kicked off by a crazy-ass parade, which The New York Times supposedly once called "a wacky classic". I found it somewhat suspicious that this huge festival is celebrated right after the Cornell students have left town. Coincidence? I don't think so.
On Saturday, the Ithaca SufferJets played against the Roc City Roller Derby of Rochester, NY. This was my first time attending and watching a roller derby event. The best description that I can give of roller derby is that it is like NASCAR, except the race cars are robust women on roller skates and organized into two seperate teams. It was well worth the $10 price of admission and something I will probably never see again once I leave Ithaca.
